The New Jerusalem

This is part three of my series on the end times:

Part 1 – End Times Timeline

Part 2 – Deliverance During the Great Tribulation

In this article, I will attempt to provide some additional information about last day events beyond what I summarized in A Simple Timeline of the End Times (Based on Scripture) and Do not be Deceived by the Antichrist or False Rapture. Particularly, here I will focus on the New Jerusalem and will provide some resources to understand the Esdra’s eagle prophecy.

New Jerusalem

From what I can piece together, the New Jerusalem will be built following the three days of darkness during the end of the world / commencement of the millennium. Part of this will involve the city of Enoch descending out of the sky to the site of the New Jerusalem (also called Zion). Saints from across the world will flee to the New Jerusalem, which will be the only place in the world to have peace and safety in the end times. Though nations will gather in war against the New Jerusalem, they will be destroyed.

According to the Doctrine and Covenants, the New Jerusalem will be built in on the American Continent in Missouri. Now, it is worth noting that according to my dreams, there will be much geological change: There will be a new mountain range around Missouri, and the whole continent will split apart up the Mississippi river. There also is an association between the New Jerusalem and mountains – I think because the City of Enoch is called a mountain, but also because this New Jerusalem might literally be in a mountain range. I also think that “mountain” could be a symbol for a holy place and for the unification of the saints into a single location.

Top Scriptures

Moses 7:61-64 – After the three days of darkness (as the millennium commences), the Lord will gather his elect from the across the earth to the new Jerusalem, and they shall meet the city of Enoch there.

Ether 13:3-11– The New Jerusalem will descend out of heaven but also will be built up again. People across the world will migrate it. Moreover, it will be built in North America.

People Gathered to Zion

Isaiah 40:9-11, 26-31 – God will gather his flock and care for them; Zion is on a mountain.

Isaiah 2:2-4 – all nations shall flow unto Zion, which is built upon a mountain and judges the nations bringing peace.

Micah 4:1-13 – very similar to Isaiah 2:2-4, but also notes that nations will gather in war against Zion but will be crushed. It also describes the new Jerusalem as the “tower of the flock”, and it says that the saints will be like a woman in travail in the midst of Babylon before the birthing of this holy city.

3 Nephi 21:22-29 – If the people do not rebel against God, God will gather his people from across the face of the earth.

Doctrine and Covenants 45:68-71 – People will migrate to Zion to escape bloodshed in the end times.

Zion Descends from Heaven:

Revelations 3:12 – The New Jerusalem descends out of Heaven and is the home of him who overcomes.

Revelations 20:7-8, Revelations 21:1-4 – After the Millenium, the new Jerusalem descends out of heaven.

Some of these prophecies are conditional upon the people repenting

Doctrine and Covenants 97:19-27 – If Zion remains pure in heart, it will escape the end times judgements.

3 Nephi 20:19-42 – The house of Israel will crush many peoples because God is with them. However, these prophecies are dependent on whether the people repent.

Built in North America

Doctrine and Covenants 57:1-3 – The New Jerusalem will be built in Missouri.

North Countries

One of the most intriguing concepts to me in this topic is how a people from “the north countries” will migrate to the New Jerusalem. As I show, this is an oft repeated concept in the scriptures. While some of these scriptures might be discussing the general gathering of the saints from across all countries, 2 Esdras 13 also notes that there actually is a distinct location of this northern land, which is described as a year and a half journey away from the Israelites’ starting point. It is my belief that this constitutes a civilization that actually exists somewhere that we are still not aware of yet (though I have received no dreams of such a thing). We also learn that these people in the North lands will bring with them rich treasures (Doctrine and Covenants 133:26-32) when they return, which I believe are their own scriptures described here (2 Nephi 29:12–14).

Particularly, I find it strange how Doctrine and Covenants 133:26-32 mentions that God will smite the rocks, ice will flow down, and then God will cast up a  highway in the great deep to presumably allow these peoples to migrate out of the northern lands to the New Jerusalem. There are of course many different theories of where this could be, but to me the most likely case is a secret location on one of the poles. 2 Nephi 21:16 also mentions a highway made for the remnant, but provides little detail.

Ether 13:3-11 – people lead out of “the north countries” to Zion.

Doctrine and Covenants 133:26-32 (mentions ice)
26 And they who are in the north countries shall come in remembrance before the Lord; and their prophets shall hear his voice, and shall no longer stay themselves; and they shall smite the rocks, and the ice shall flow down at their presence.
27 And an highway shall be cast up in the midst of the great deep.
28 Their enemies shall become a prey unto them,
29 And in the barren deserts there shall come forth pools of living water; and the parched ground shall no longer be a thirsty land.
30 And they shall bring forth their rich treasures unto the children of Ephraim, my servants.
31 And the boundaries of the everlasting hills shall tremble at their presence.

Jeremiah 16:14-16 – God sends servants to gather his elect from “the land of the north”

Jeremiah 23:7-8 – God lead some of the lost tribes to “the north country”

Jeremiah 31:8-9 – “I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth … I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble”; what is the ‘straight way’?

Zechariah 2:6 – God’s people flee from “the land of the north”

D&C 110:11 – Moses gave them the keys to gathering the lost tribes including 10 tribes led to the north

Scriptures that might be referring to the north land

2 Nephi 29:12–14 – mentions 3 groups: jews, nephites, and “lost tribes” who all have scriptures. Could this be referring to people in the north land?

3 Nephi 17:4 – Jesus leaves Nephites to go to lost tribes. Is this in the north land?

2 Esdras 13

2 Esdras 13 describes in greater the location of this northern land.

  • describes lord coming on a mountain flying through heaven.
  • the mountain he is on is mount Zion “But he shall stand upon the top of the mount Sion. 36 And Sion shall come, and shall be shewed to all men, being prepared and builded, like as thou sawest the hill graven without hands.”
  • Mentions the mysterious location of the children of israel:
40 Those are the ten tribes, which were carried away prisoners out of their own land in the time of Osea the king, whom Salmanasar the king of Assyria led away captive, and he carried them over the waters, and so came they into another land.
41 But they took this counsel among themselves, that they would leave the multitude of the heathen, and go forth into a further country, where never mankind dwelt,
42 That they might there keep their statutes, which they never kept in their own land. 43 And they entered into Euphrates by the narrow places of the river.
44 For the most High then shewed signs for them, and held still the flood, till they were passed over.
45 For through that country there was a great way to go, namely, of a year and a half: and the same region is called Arsareth.
46 Then dwelt they there until the latter time; and now when they shall begin to come,
47 The Highest shall stay the springs of the stream again, that they may go through: therefore sawest thou the multitude with peace.

City of Enoch

Another interesting concept to the New Jerusalem is the coming of the City of Enoch. The City of Enoch is never mentioned in the Bible – is only mentioned in scripture revealed by Joseph Smith. According to these scriptures, Enoch presided over a city full of saints, and God transfigured the whole city and brought it into heaven. So, part of the arising of the New Jerusalem will involve the City of Enoch descending out of heaven to this location.

Genesis 5:21–24 – All we learn here is that God took Enoch.
Hebrews 11:5 – Enoch was translated.
Jude 1:14–15 – Enoch prophesied of the second coming.
Moses 7:18–21 – Enoch built the city of Zion which was taken up into heaven.
Moses 7:61-63 – City of Enoch returns and meets the new Jerusalem following the 3 days of darkness and 144,000.
Moses 7:23; Moses 7:69 – The City of Enoch is translated.
D&C 38:4 –The City of Enoch is translated.
D&C 45:11–14 – the City of Enoch reserved until the day of righteousness

Geological Change

Another related topic to the New Jerusalem is how the land masses will completely change as the world ends. It is frequently discussed how the Lord will bring down the mountains and cause great earthquakes which are able to displace islands and mountains, to the point of utterly breaking down the earth (which reminds me of the phenomenon of soil liquefaction). We also learn that the mount of olives will split, the oceans will be “healed”, and the land masses will combine together into one continent. Following the millennium, the entire earth will be replaced with a new earth.

Splitting of Mount of Olives and healing of the Sea

Ezekiel 47:8-9 – dead sea will be healed and fish will live in it.

Zechariah 14 – Jerusalem will be captured by enemies. The mount of olives will split and living water will flow out of Jerusalem to the oceans. The saints will flee out of Jerusalem to the mountains. There will be geological change around Jerusalem. The Lord will send war and plague against his enemies. The millennium commences.

D&C 45:48 – again notes how the mount will split after the Lord sets foot on it.

Zechariah 14:8 – living waters leave Jerusalem to the “former sea” and “hinder sea”

Doctrine and Covenants 133:29 – living water coming from barren deserts

The Map will be Changed

Isaiah 24:19-20 – following earth quakes, the earth is “utterly broken down”, “clean dissolved”, “moved exceedingly”. In fact, “it shall fall, and not rise again”.

Revelation 6:12-14 – Mountains and islands are moved out of place.

Doctrine and Covenants 133:23–24 – God shall break down the mountains, the sea will be driven back to the north, and continents and islands will merge into one land mass.

Earthquakes

Revelation 16:18 – there will be a great earthquake such as has never been known to man.

Matthew 24:7 – there shall be earthquakes in diverse places.

Joel 2:10 – the earth shall quake during the days of darkness.

After Millennium

Revelation 21:1 – following the millennium, the first earth passes away, and there is a new heaven and new earth with no more sea.

Doctrine and Covenants 29:23 – A new heaven and new earth will replace the old following the millennium.

Esdra’s Eagle Prophecy

I figured I would also briefly mention in this article the Esdra’s eagle prophecy. Essentially, it is hypothesized that the series of Kings discussed in 2 Esdras 11-12 are actually US presidents. If this is true, then by my calculations, a succession crisis imminently awaits the USA (as of 2025). Here are some links that may provide further light into the topic of Esdra’s eagle:

Final Things

Obviously, a lot of these prophecies aren’t directly applicable to us.

However, I do think that the concept of the New Jerusalem should definitely be on our radar, because there might actually come a day in which we need to flee to the New Jerusalem.
